Continuing Education Programs at GCSD
The Gouverneur Central School Continuing Education Program is offering many exciting courses starting in September. Lessons are available for children, teens, and adults of the community. The following fitness, technology, foods, and music classes will be presented at the Gouverneur High School and East Side School.

NYS Driver's License 5-HR Course
Instructors: Joe Wahl & Ron Thomas

Sign-ups are conducted at 8:00 a.m. at the Gouverneur High School (prior to instruction). You must have a driver's permit to register for this class. The cost of registration is $35.

The classes are held the first Saturday of each month from 8:15 AM to 2:30 PM. Please call GHS at 287-1900 to confirm the date and time for this class.

Pool (Updated 1/16/2012)
Exercise in one of the North Country’s finest pool facilities located right in town! The GHS pool facilities have much to offer all members of the community. The swim times are available throughout the school district's calendar year. Additional programs are being planned (water walking, tot/parent swim, water zumba). If interested, call 287-1900.

Adults -- 10 Weeks @ $7.50 per week, for a total of $75.
Resistance machines, treadmills, elliptical machines, stability balls, resistance tubes available for use along with workout floor.
Hatha Yoga (Updated 1/16/2012)
Instructor: Ellen Beeler

Hatha Yoga classes give a well balanced workout for the muscles, joints, organs, glands and nervous system. Classes consist of a meditative warm-up, a series of more energetic postures, and a cool-down. Sessions end with deep relaxation. Hatha Yoga may improve a person's health, strength, balance, agility, as well as reduce stress.
It is NOT necessary to be flexible in order to gain great benefits from this class.  Beginners are welcome!

Participants should wear comfortable exercise clothing and bring a yoga mat or small blanket, and also a personal towel.

Class meets in the GCS Media Center.

Learn the art of karate from a highly experienced martial artist. Lessons emphasize personal safety, self-discipline, fitness, and respect. Beginners and individuals with previous training are all welcome to attend classes. Karate is a highly motivating activity that improves coordination, increases strength and flexibility, and allows a person to gain confidence in many areas of self-defense. Uniforms and training manuals are available through the class instructor.

Adults and Youth (12 years, teens, and adults) - Tuesday (6:00 - 7:30 PM) East Side Gym
Martial Arts Training improves fitness, confidence, energy levels, self-discipline, and safety awareness.

Kids (7 - 11 years) - Tuesdays (5:00 - 5:45 PM) East Side Gym
Workouts offer lessons in discipline, control, concentration, and physical fitness.
Academics are stressed and reviewed in all youth programs.
Family Zumba® (Updated 11/1/2011)
Stephanie Plaisted
The Zumba Dance Party is here! East Side is offering a Zumba® class for students and family members. Our Zumba® instructor is Stephanie Plaisted (5th grade teacher at East Side). Stephanie is an Official Zumba® instructor and is licensed to teach Zumba® Basics I and II, Zumba® Toning, and ZumbAtomic®. She currently teaches ZumbAtomic® at East Side and is thrilled to be able to extend the program to our families as well.

When: The first Wednesday of every month, starting Wednesday, November 2nd!
Location: East Side Gymnasium
Time: 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Cost: $1 per participant

*Students under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Chair Caning Class (Updated 9/26/2011)

Learn how to cane your old chair that desperatly needs a new cane seat. Class will cover caning and rush techniques. Bring the chair ready to cane, and instructor will provide the materials. Class is $35 plus cost of materials. Four dates: Oct 18, 25, Nov 1, 8 4:30-6pm. Class will be held in Home & Careers classroom, Gouverneur Central. Scuba Diving NYS Certification (Updated 9/13/2011)
Instructors: Moe & Khris Hunt

The course will be offered by one of the most experienced diving schools in the state, Hunt's Diving from Clayton, NY. Most of the equipment will be supplied. The instructors, Moe and Kris Hunt, have done programs for YMCA's, Universities, and corporations. They are also recovery experts who bring a great deal of knowledge and practical insights to their class and pool lessons. New York State SCUBA certification is awarded at the completion of the course.

Minimum age is 15 years old and fitness standards will be in effect.

Computer Classes

Wednesday April 20th & 27th @ 3:15 - 4:45 PM

Session 1:
Mail Merge - Learn how to use a database or MS excel to create a mail merge with MS word. We will be touching upon how to set up a database or excel worksheet to use with a mail merge. Learn how to create letters, envelops, and mailing labels.

Session 2:
Photoshop - Have you ever found the must have graphic online but it needs a bit of tweeking to use? That must have graphic will make your newsletter, web page, worksheet, or memo just perfect! Learn how to remove those pesky backgrounds from objects you want to keep. Learn how to blend and make collages of your favorite photos. All this and a bit more in this 1.5 hour session.
Gouverneur Community Jazz/Rock Ensemble
Instructors: Kathy Moses & John Dixon

This music centered gathering will be open to members of the community and GCS students who are interested in playing selections from the 1920's to the present. All levels of musical skills and all musical instruments are welcome to these weekly sessions.

Come to the first session on Thursday, Sept. 23. "Brush up your technique and build up your chops!"

Family & Consumer Canning Class
Instructor: Debbie White

Learn to preserve and can foods for your family’s enjoyment later on. Participants can choose to attend one, two or all of the classes. Select between a 3:00pm or 4:30pm time slot. Participants must provide their own food items, canning jars, lids and bands. Also, bring canning supplies such as canners, jar lifters and funnels. A complete ingredients list will be supplied. Bulk food purchases will be available the Friday prior to each class. Sign up now, as space is limited.

Sessions will include:
Sept 15 - pickles, green beans, cukes or zucchini)
Sept 22 - tomatoes, salsa, spaghetti sauce
Sept 29 - applesauce, apples, pears
Oct 6 - hot pepper jelly, zucchini/corn relish
Oct 13 - fruit jams
Oct 20 - canned beef, veggie soup
Oct 27 - pumpkin, squash
